Samare

Samare is a Montreal-based collective of four designer-architects: Laurie Bedikian, Nicolas Bellavance Lecompte, Mania Bedikian, and Patrick Meirim de Barros. The team elaborates traditional furniture elements of the country's culture by transforming them into contemporary objects. Taking its name from the helical seed of the maple tree that falls by performing an "evolution" on itself, the Studio promotes itself as a "Semente" apt to develop the new apprehensions of Canadian design by surpassing traditional iconographic clichés. Samare is inspired by the profound ability that the country has had and still has to adapt to change. Each object designed is the result of reflection on the way we live and occupy space. The first collection stems from the aboriginal word "awadare": the gut (babiche) reappears in a new form, combined with steel structures. The choice to use these two contrasting elements gives the object a very unique character. The linear purity of steel on the one hand and the sinuous organic material of "babiche" propose a reflection on the use of industrial materials with traditional ones. The babiche generally used for the manufacture of paddles and baskets, takes its name from a French adaptation of the word sisibabiche, which comes from the Indian-American language Montagneise and means "petit-corde, small rope. "This technique was adopted for many centuries in transportation and in the different uses of daily life; of great help to travelers who had to face extreme weather conditions. Babiche is a material prized for its durability, woven in a uniquely artisanal manner from a single undyed leather thread. This thread is applied while still damp to the objects in order to ensure their surface tension after drying. With this technique, SAMARE comes up not only with an exclusive collection but also participates in the preservation of a living tradition that is on the verge of extinction.Laurie Bedikian is Canadian and lives in Montreal.
